Micro Irrigation
Many people don’t realize that there is a difference between micro irrigation and drip irrigation. While both types of systems are low-volume alternatives to traditional methods of irrigation, our landscape specialists more often recommend micro irrigation systems. Because irrigation systems can become clogged, it is to your advantage to be able to see water being delivered. By design, drip systems release water very gradually, literally drip by drip, making them difficult to monitor. Micro irrigation systems, however, deliver a fine sprinkle or mist that can be seen and therefore easily monitored for both efficiency and efficacy.
Of course, one way to prevent problems such as clogging is to use the most advanced technologies and high-quality products, such as those produced by Toro. At North County Landscape, we use only those irrigation products that we know will stand the test of time. A good micro irrigation system will eventually pay for itself, using up to 60 percent less water than conventional pop-up systems and sprinkler heads. However, if the system needs to be replaced within a year due to the use of lesser-quality parts, you will end up spending far more money than you save.
Compared to many drip systems, the micro irrigation systems we install cost a bit more up front. However, while many drip systems use inexpensive parts that are prone to clogging and damage from insects, our micro irrigation systems use durable, long-lasting emitters that are highly clog-resistant. Because we are experts in soils, plants, and overall landscape planning, we are able to strategically place micro irrigation systems so that your lawn, garden, trees, shrubs, and other plants get the coverage they need in the most cost-effective way possible.
Drip Systems
There are cases in which drip systems are the best solution, often when used in combination with micro irrigation systems as part of a comprehensive irrigation plan. As with most landscape services, the effectiveness of the drip system comes down basically to the quality of the product and the knowledge of the landscapers installing the product.
At North County Landscape, we use the most advanced and well-produced drip emitters available to decrease the risk of clogging. While we highly recommend keeping the emitters visible, we install “invisible” systems when our customers specifically request that we do so. We also know how to choose the right drip tubing for the right job. In general, we avoid one-quarter-inch spaghetti tubing, although it can be useful in watering potted plants. We usually use one-half-inch tubing or, in the case of larger jobs, three-quarter-inch tubing. Whichever solution is best suited to a situation is the one we recommend.
Drainage Systems
Lingering excess water is the enemy of a healthy lawn. If you have problems with the accumulation of rain water, groundwater, or other sources of standing water, North County Landscape can help. We will analyze your outdoor space and suggest a drainage solution that is best suited to your needs. As experts in drain installation, we may suggest a French drain as an aesthetically pleasing way to redirect excess water. It may be possible to solve isolated collections of standing water with water-loving plants or even some minor grading work. Even if your land is extremely flat, we will find a solution that is perfect for you.
Irrigation Controllers
It is far easier to regulate your irrigation system if you have a sprinkler timer. This is one instance in which the cost of the product does not necessarily correlate with the quality of that product. We have found that relatively inexpensive controllers, powered by a nine-volt battery that needs to be changed only once a year, work as dependably and often more dependably than expensive boxes. While we will install whatever controller the customer wishes, most people get far better value out of the cheaper controllers than the big boxes, which can require expensive repairs when they malfunction and be difficult to use.
